Confirm us in thy virtue,

And grant us grace ever it to pursue.

SIMON

Say we all together, amen. Amen.

And they all kiss the ground

FIRST JEW

Now, fellows, take heed for in this city,
Yonder sitteth a drunken crew. 15

SECOND JEW

To do them good it were great pity.

THIRD JEW

Yea! I pray God send them shame through and through.

FIRST JEW

Liquor in their brains so slyly does creep
That they chitter and chatter as if they jays were.

SECOND JEW

Yea! were any of them well asleep, 20
It were gracious to the river them to bear,
There them to baptize!

FIRST JEW

That were, as thinketh me,
A gentle sport to see;
A better game to be 25
Could no man devise.

PETER

Sirs, alas, what do you mean?
Why scorn ye now thus God's grace?
It is nothing as you have seen:
There is no drunk man in this place. 30
Wherefore right great is your trespass.
But, sirs, hear what it doth signify:
Fulfilled is now to man's solace
Of Joel the pregnant prophecy,
In which that he 35
That you have seen
In words plain
Declare certain.
Now blessed God be.
Amen.
